Volunteer Event, Saturday, August 25

On Saturday, August 25, TDTrails.org will join the Tahoe Donner Forestry Department for a volunteer event to continue rerouting the trail between markers 27 and 28.

This is the same section of trail we worked on last month. It runs along the side of the old S&R property that Tahoe Donner recently purchased as a new home for the Forestry Department.

The view of Donner Lake from the downslope side of that property is spectacular. And this is also a good opportunity to take a look at the future Forestry facility.

When: 9:00 am, Saturday, August 25. The day should end by 3:30. (But you are, of course, free leave at any time.)

Where: We will meet at the current Forestry facility (14514 Northwoods Blvd.) before heading to the trail site off Teton Way.

What to Bring:

  • Water (plenty of it!)
  • Lunch and snacks (unless you plan to go home for lunch)
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses (to be used as safety shades also)
  • Work gloves
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Long pants, and sturdy shoes (no sandals)

We will provide tools, but in the past we have sometimes had so many people show up that we have exhausted Forestry’s somewhat limited supply of equipment. So if you do have any hand tools that you would like to bring, doing so could prove very helpful.

The most useful tool you could bring is a round nose shovel. Picks, mattocks, digging bars and rock bars are also quite handy. So are pruning saws and lopping shears. And, of course, forestry and firefighting tools like McCleods and Pulaskis are especially useful.

If you do bring any tools, please label them beforehand.

Volunteer Event, Sunday, July 29

On Sunday, July 29, TDTrails.org will join the Tahoe Donner Forestry Department for a volunteer event to rerout a portion of trail between markers 27 and 28.

The specific section runs along the side of the old S&R property that Tahoe Donner recently purchased as a new home for the Forestry Department. The view of Donner Lake from the downslope side of that property is reportedly spectacular.

When: 9:00 am, Sunday, July 29. The day should end by 3:30. (But you are, of course, free to leave at any time.)

Where: We will meet at the current Forestry facility (14514 Northwoods Blvd.) before heading to the trail site off Teton Way.

What to Bring:

  • Water (plenty of it!)
  • Lunch and snacks (Unfortunately, Tahoe Donner won’t be catering this time.)

Tahoe Donner Trails Day: Saturday, June 23, 2012

The first volunteer opportunity of the season is coming up on Saturday, June 23rd. Please see the information below.

Tahoe Donner’s annual volunteer trail work day is coming up. This year we are offering two projects for interested members:

Project 1 – Trail Construction to improve access to the trail network from Hillside Drive. We will be constructing a new trail to connect Hillside Drive with trail section 6A-7A. There is an existing trail that will be decommissioned and rerouted on to higher ground. This project will require digging, heavy lifting and use of hand tools.

Project 2 – Trash Removal and Vegetation Trimming on the Nature Loop along Northwoods Blvd. The Nature Loop needs a spruce up; one of the most heavily used trails in TD it receives a lot of trash from the road. This project will be better for families with small kids or anyone requiring lighter duty. We hope to cover the length of the Nature Loop from the clubhouse to the driving range.

Tahoe Donner will provide a boxed lunch to all volunteers (vegetarian and meat available). Also a free T-shirt will be given to all volunteers. For these reasons, please RSVP with Sarah Collamer, Trails Steward, at scollamer@tahoedonner.com or (530) 587-9432.

Logistics:

Saturday, June 23, 2012

  • 9:00 AM: Members meet at the Tahoe Donner Forestry Building located at 14514 Northwoods Boulevard
  • 9:15 AM: Work parties will leave for one of two projects in individual cars.

Work usually finishes up around 3PM. Volunteers will have access to their vehicles and can leave anytime. See below for a listing of recommended items to bring with you to the trail day.

  6. Long pants, and sturdy shoes (no sandals)
